Defend East Phillips: Civil Disobedience Training

Why do we break the law for what we believe? Why do we do it together? How do we disrupt business as usual? What it's like to get arrested for a cause? How can I support people on the front lines if I don't want to get arrested? Join the CJC Sunday November 13th in the Little Earth community, 2495 18th Ave S, Minneapolis, to discuss these topics and more.

What's happening in East Phillips? The city wants to demolish the abandoned Roof Depot building which sits on heaps of untouched arsenic, for which there is no stated remediation plan. After kicking up all of this arsenic, the city wants to build a refueling station for its vehicles on the site.

East Phillips is already one of the most polluted areas in Minnesota. An estimated 12% of its residents have asthma – explicitly because of the pollution in the area. It will only get worse with almost 900 more vehicles going in and out every day. The community in East Phillips wants to build an urban farm – this would include rehabilitating the building, which would not need to be torn down and thus save the neighborhood from further ecological destruction.

The East Phillips Neighborhood Institute, the Climate Justice Committee, and many other community groups are coming together to fight this blatant environmental racism. We are offering this training to provide every community member possible with tools, methods, and connections for fighting back. If necessary, we can leverage these skills to stop demolition of the roof depot.
