Queer Justice is Climate Justice

Updated: Jun 10, 2021

We the Climate Justice Committee (CJC) are a part of the movement for queer rights and trans lives. We are a grassroots group and many of our members are members of the LGBT community. We see Pride as a celebration of Stonewall which is our history. We also see climate justice as an important issue for the LGBT community and queer rights as a key issue for the environmental movement.

As Lindi von Mutius, a board member at Out4Sustainability and Sierra Club chief of staff explains, “The people who are going to be most impacted by climate change are our people. They're queer Brown people. They're Brown people. They're queer people. They're poor people. And when you look statistically at who experiences poverty in this country, in the LGBTQ community, it's trans people. Our trans siblings are going to be the ones excluded from emergency disaster relief. They're the ones who are going to face violence.

So asking questions like, 'How is climate change going to hurt our communities specifically?' has become so important.”
