Stop Military CO2 Emissions Now!

Updated: Jun 9, 2021

On Thursday, June 3, 2021the Climate Justice Committee conducted a bannering on S 34th Ave over Hwy 62 to tell evening commuters that the U.S. military is the world's largest polluter. This message is particularly relevant to the surrounding neighborhood of the military base near MSP and Fort Snelling. Massive campuses of military infrastructure like this exist not just in our own communities, but in those of 140 countries in the world. Aircraft & other vehicle emissions, incorrect disposal of hazardous waste, massive expanses of heat trapping concrete, and bloated budgets funded by the public mean military bases harm the communities they inhabit. The CJC demands Climate Justice Now!

"The Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University estimates that the U.S. military has emitted roughly 1.2 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions since the global war on terror began in 2001 (Darby, 2019). This level of greenhouse gas emissions is equivalent to operating 257 million passenger cars annually. The carbon emissions from war-related activity in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Syria is projected to have reached 400 million metric tons of carbon dioxide through 2019 (Darby, 2019)."
